Since the late 1990s I have been teaching and writing about how we introduce girls to menstruation. Through the sheer joy of the Celebration Day for Girls workshops I am shown again and again how important this threshold is and what a difference it can make to girls when it’s celebrated: their relationship with their body, their menstrual experiences, their confidence, their relationships with family and peers and their future intimate relationships. Have a look at our Celebration Day for Girls website, www.celebrationdayforgirls.com for more information, as well as the clip at the bottom of the home page.
I wrote A Blessing Not a Curse to inform and support mothers and other carers of girls, as well as girls themselves about our cultural legacy of ‘the curse’ and how to transform this to create a healthy confident experience for girls of their maturing female body. The Girltopia cards have been designed and written to prompt the many and various, sometimes tricky, sometimes joyful, often revealing and thought-provoking, conversations that support healthy adolescent questioning and maturation.
